The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 marked its 70th anniversary in Vienna, organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Austria’s national broadcaster ORF. More than a music competition, Eurovision has evolved into a global live entertainment spectacle, where languages, identities, and artistic expressions converge on one stage. Under the motto “United by Music,” the Eurovision 2026 attracted fans from over 75 countries and territories, making Vienna 2026 the biggest live Eurovision audience in years.
As an Official Technical Supplier, ACME Lighting was proud to be a part of the epic production with nearly 500 fixtures. For Lighting Designer Tim Routledge, Eurovision represents a completely different standard from conventional live shows, where broadcast precision and creative expression must coexist in real time. In high-level live music broadcast productions, ACME fixtures were synchronized with music, camera movement, scenic transitions, and emotional pacing, ensuring a cohesive visual narrative.

The stage, designed by Florian Wieder, was built around a visual identity defined by three symbolic elements: The Leaf, The Curved Line, and The Golden Construct. Together, they represented renewal, emotional connection, and the balance between artistic expression and technical structure. As Florian described it, “The overall design feels soft and organic, like a sketch drawn in one fluid motion.”
Tim translated Florian’s vision into a dynamic lighting system that celebrated cultural diversity and transformed each performance into a unique visual narrative. Within this system, ACME fixtures defined the visual composition through precise rhythm, atmospheric layering, and cinematic depth, adding texture, emotion, and finesse to every moment.

The PIXEL LINE IP formed the flowing “Curved Line” structure across the stage, creating spiral arcs that visually translated musical energy into spatial waveforms. To respond to each beat and transition, the fixture continuously shifted in intensity and motion, creating a fluid visual flow that evolved throughout each performance. Tim praised its super clean looks and fast strobe response, precisely matching the rhythm of the music. Even under complex programming conditions, the fixture maintained visual clarity and brightness for both broadcast cameras and live audience — a critical balance in broadcast-scale productions.

Positioned along the stage edges, the PULSAR S2 introduced a dual-sided design, combining beams, wash, strobe and pixel effects into a single unit. Instead of a single-purpose fixture, it functioned as a visual node within the overall lighting system, capable of adapting its role according to the narrative flow and spatial requirements of each moment. This significantly reduced fixture redundancy while expanding design possibilities across multiple scenes. As Tim emphasized, “The PULSAR S2 is not about quantity. It’s about maximizing functionality.”

The golden construct in the background was shaped by the BLINDER LINE 10 IP and BLINDER LINE 5 IP, adding cinematic depth and warmth to the visual composition. With a multi-color LED source and tungsten emulation, the fixtures defined the warm golden tones central to the stage palette. Equipped with ACME’s patented electronic frost system, the fixtures could change to three different angles to create soft, cinematic looks suited for broadcast imaging. Tim highlighted their high brightness, soft looks and broadcast-friendly colors. The fixtures proved equally effective in both static and dynamic moments, ensuring the visual richness translated flawlessly across every camera angle.

To amplify the visual energy toward the audience zones, the TORNADO effect lights were deployed along the stage sides. Due to structural load limitations, Tim strategically positioned the fixture at consistent intervals rather than in continuous line arrays, enhancing spatial depth across the arena. With remarkable brightness, saturated colors, and kinetic motion, the fixture transformed the entire arena into a unified emotional and visual space.

At Eurovision 2026, ACME fixtures fulfilled both the creative vision and the reliability demands of a large-scale live broadcast environment, ensuring consistent performance across every moment on stage and on screen. As Eurovision continues to expand with the launch of Eurovision Asia in Bangkok in November 2026, the motto “United by Music” extends further across borders and continents. Looking ahead, ACME remains committed to driving innovation in stage lighting, empowering world-class productions through the fusion of cutting-edge technology and creative expression.
